I’ve been humming a song in my head all morning.
This world is not my home
I’m only passin’ through.
My treasures are laid up
Somewhere beyond the blue.
The angels beckon me
From heavens open door.
And I can’t feel at home
In this world anymore.
With all the tragedy and uncertainty in our world and the headlines, I guess I find myself thinking a whole lot more about Heaven. I’m comforted to read God’s word and remember He has a master plan. He is God over all. I read scriptures about His promises to believers. I think about my personal relationship with God made possible by Christ’s death and resurrection.
He is God over all.
2 Cor 4:18 So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.
Because God knows I am tempted to fear, because He knows it’s easy for me to fret as I look around at the brokenness and godlessness of our world, He offers me constant reminders that this world is not my home.
I want to share with you one funny way I’m reminded to fix my eyes on eternity.
Every time I walk through my bedroom to the bathroom I notice it – a light blanket of dust on my dresser. Now, it doesn’t matter if it was dusted a couple of hours ago or a couple of days. The blanket seems to always be there. It doesn’t help that the light from the window shines in on it at just the right angle. In my earlier days I would have probably obsessed over a way to keep it dust free. I used to pride myself in having everything in it’s place. But these days, I don’t mind so much. The truth is that dust is always with us because nothing remains new.
In fact, I have been thinking, Dust is God’s way of reminding me that things of this life are temporal.
Do you know what dust is?
Medicinenet.com defines house dust this way: House dust is composed of a number of natural substances, including dried food particles, mold spores, pollen, fabric fibers, animal dander, and insect parts, especially those of dust mites and cockroaches.
I know! Nasty. Right?
Simply put, dust is sign of decay. We all know that nothing remains shiny and new. I can look in the mirror and attest to that. So is the nature of this world, this life. It’s temporary.
James 4:14 says, What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.
A depressing reality if it ended there. But it doesn’t.
A depressing reality if it ended there. But it doesn’t.
The gospel message makes all the difference in our hearts and lives. This is BIG NEWS! Because of Christ, we are not trapped in this body of decay in this world of decay. Through Christ, we are made new. We are given eternal life. It’s a gift we must personally accept.
You’re probably familiar with John 3:16, For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.
Have you personally accepted that gift?
2 Corinthians 5:17 Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!
Christ said in John 5:24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.
In this truth is where my hope lies. We see it more every day, our world is in a heap of trouble! But thank God for His indescribable gift – 2 Corinthians 9:15.
Are you fearful? Are you wondering about your future? Maybe a more important question for you to ask yourself is “What about your eternity?” Have you passed from death unto life by accepting the truth of the gospel. If not, you can find out more by clicking the link below.
How to have a Personal Relationship with God
And Believer, perhaps you’re struggling with fear of the unknown. I want to share three scriptures with you as a reminder that God is in control and He loves you.
First, remember the God who loves you is over all.
Psalm 146:3-5
3 Don’t put your confidence in powerful people;
there is no help for you there.
4 When they breathe their last, they return to the earth,
and all their plans die with them.
5 But joyful are those who have the God of Israel as their
helper, whose hope is in the Lord their God.
Psalm 144:15b Joyful indeed are those whose God is the LORD.
1 Corinthians 2:9 As it is written: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived” — the things God has prepared for those who love him–
Also, remember, even though godless men conspire, God uses their plans to accomplish His purposes. They cannot prevail over God.
Rev. 17:17 For God has put a plan into their minds, a plan that will carry out his purposes.
Maybe it’s time to turn off the news and turn to God’s Word. Give Him your fears. Give Him your attention. Pray to Him and let Him comfort your heart. And then join Him in reaching others with the great news of the Gospel. The HOPE He provides is eternal and sure!
And, the next time you see a blanket of dust, be reminded…this life is temporal. This world is headed toward death and decay. But God conquered death and made a way for us to have eternal victory over death through Christ. What a reason to celebrate today!
This world is not my home. I’m only passing through.
